The importance of reading at home
Reading together at home is one of the best ways to support your child’s learning. Spending a few minutes each day sharing a book, talking about the story or looking at pictures helps children build their language and confidence. It also shows them that reading can be enjoyable and relaxing, not just something done at school. Reading at home helps children practise the skills they are learning in class and supports their progress across the Curriculum for Wales. Most importantly, it gives children valuable time with an adult, helping them feel supported, motivated and proud of their learning.
How can you help your child at home?
You do not need to be an expert reader to help your child. The most important things are time, interest, and encouragement. Try to set aside a short, regular time to read together, even if it is just a few minutes. Listening to your child read, reading to them, or sharing a book all help build confidence and enjoyment.
Small, positive interactions around reading are often more effective than long sessions.
Reading does not have to mean finishing a whole book. Comics, magazines, information books, instructions, and signs all count. Reading aloud to your child, even when they can read independently, helps develop vocabulary and understanding.
Some children find reading more challenging than others. If your child becomes tired or frustrated, it is okay to stop and come back to it later. Keeping reading relaxed and pressure-free helps children develop a positive attitude and confidence over time.
